Fabio Bundi drafted by the Miami Marlins

For Switzerland, the draft is a notable event: since Otto Hess in 1902, no Swiss player has reached a Major League Baseball organisation. Being selected by Miami brings Bundi significantly closer to that goal. This weekend he travels to the USA for a medical and to sign his contract.

The path

Bundi started playing baseball at the age of seven and came up through the youth levels of the Rümlang Kobras before playing for the Zürich Barracudas at senior level. He made the jump to the USA through college baseball, most recently playing two seasons for Monterey Peninsula College in California. In autumn 2025 UCLA took notice of him; US media highlighted his fastball of up to 153 km/h and his curveball.

Baseball runs in the Bundi family. Father Mike Bundi was a player himself and has coached for many years; he is among the figures of Swiss baseball listed in the SBSF Hall of Fame. Bundi’s older brother Livio plays for the Hamburg Stealers.

What it means for Swiss baseball

Bundi has already made his mark with the national team: as a pitcher he helped Switzerland reach 11th place at the 2025 European Championship in September — the best result a Swiss side has achieved. His path shows that an international baseball career is possible from Switzerland too.
